Join us for the closing of “Neighborhoods & Shared Memories: South Central” as we celebrate the historic neighborhood surrounding Jefferson/Silva High School! Visitors are invited to participate in an afternoon of free crafts and information for all ages as we enjoy the last day of the exhibit. Check out the schedule of events below:

1:00 PM – Lincoln Park Mini-Underpass Mural Workshop with Gabriel Gaytán 2:00 PM – Curator-led Exhibit Tour 3:00 PM – Lincoln Park Mini-Underpass Mural Workshop with Gabriel Gaytán From 1 PM to 4 PM, you can also make your own silver fox ornament in honor of Jefferson/Silva’s iconic mascot (while supplies last).

About Gabriel Gaytán:

Gabriel Gaytán is a native born El Pasoan who has recently attracted wide attention as a visual artist. His works grace the walls of many private collections and public buildings, including the underpasses of Lincoln Park in El Paso, Texas. He explore his cultural heritage through images and symbols, stating, “Color and form evoke messages for the soul. Our ancestors were keenly aware of this and they create an artistic language that integrates colors and sounds. Revival of this ancient literacy is a dominant theme in my work. My Chicano identity provides me with a mosaic of ancient and contemporary experiences, born of love and peaceful contemplation as much as war and revolution.”

About “Neighborhoods & Shared Memories: South Central”:

Nestled in what was once land that hosted pear orchards and cotton fields flourished a working-class neighborhood that would become synonymous with El Paso’s warm and welcoming nature. Many of its residents settled into this area after being displaced from a neighborhood called Stormsville, which was condemned in 1928 These neighborhoods and their residents helped launch an area that would host iconic establishments and institutions such as Chicos Tacos, Ascarate Park, The County Coliseum, Good Luck Café, Washington Park, Thomas Jefferson High School, and the El Paso Zoo to name a few.
